Get ready for the Summer holidays with these children’s Sun Hats. A quick project to knit in lightweight cotton yarns.
The pattern covers ages from birth to 7 years. The girl’s hat incorporates coral knot stitch (full instructions given) which gives a lacy effect and is decorated with 2 flowers. The boy’s hat has a simple ridged pattern and can be decorated with some fun buttons.
YARN
Any Double Knitting (8 ply) yarn can be used so long as it gives the same tension as below and sufficient length of yarn is bought.
Gauge: 22 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
The girl’s hat shown is knitted in James C. Brett Cotton On (50% Cotton – 50% Acrylic) – Shade No 7. Contrast yarn is Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Candyfloss Pink, Raspberry Pink, and Lime Green. The boy’s hat is knitted in Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Sky Blue.

US 3 – 3.25 mm
There are 3 different sizes for both hats to cover the age ranges:
Small -16 inches inches, 40.5 cm (birth up to 2 years)
Medium 18 inches, 46 cm (from 2 up to 5 years)
Large 20 inches, 51 cm (from 5 up to 7 years)
