Gold vermeil is high-quality sterling silver coated in a layer of high-quality gold. The silver must be of sterling grade (92.5% silver) or higher and the gold must be 10ct or higher and a minimum thickness of 2.5 microns.
Gold filled (also known as rolled gold) comprises a solid brass (copper and zinc) core over which gold is mechanically bonded using heat and pressure. Gold filled items must contain, by law, 5% or 1/20 of gold by weight. The gold used is generally 12K or 14K. Despite the core metal being a lesser value than the silver in gold vermeil, the process of bonding the gold onto the base metal creates jewellery that is long lasting if looked after as the layer of gold is relatively thicker.
