The Ultimate Guide to Traveller’s Notebooks: Everything You Need to Know

The Art of the Analog: Why the Traveller’s Notebook is your Perfect Travel Accessory.

In a world dominated by cloud syncing, push notifications, and glass screens, there is something old school, and deeply satisfying, about a handmade notebook, lovingly crafted to plan your dream adventures and record all the fabulous places that you have visited.

Whether you’re a digital nomad, a bullet journal enthusiast, or someone who just needs to clear their head, the Traveller’s Notebook isn’t just stationery; it’s a new habit, uplifting routine and refreshed lifestyle.

What is a Travel Journal?

What is a travel journal and why do you need one? Read on to find out how a pocket-sized planner will be your best travelling companion.

A travel journal is essentially a hybrid between a diary, a scrapbook, and a logistical log. It is a dedicated space where you record the experiences, emotions, and discoveries you encounter while exploring a new place.

Unlike a standard itinerary, which tells you where you need to go, a travel journal captures where you’ve been and how it felt to be there.

A travel journal is deeply personal, so there are no “wrong” entries. However, most travellers include a mix of the following:

  • Place Notes: Location, Date, Time, Weather etc.
  • Narrative Entries: Long-form writing about a specific day, a funny mishap, or a meaningful conversation with a local.
  • Ephemera: Physical mementos like train tickets, pressed flowers, wine labels, or museum stubs taped onto the pages.
  • Sketches and Photos: Quick doodles of a cathedral’s silhouette or a snap of a street food stall.
  • Logistics: The name of that “hidden gem” bistro or the price of a taxi, which helps for future trips or recommending spots to friends.

I have always kept a journal and even in our now ‘tech age’ I still enjoy the tactile process of writing. Sarah Lou Crafts signature Cork Fabric Notebook Journals are beautiful and practical for documenting memories of your travel adventures or for planning future treks. There are 3 ways to set up your notebook further on below.

Why You Should Use One.

Plan and record all your adventures. Travel journals are the perfect way for you to plan trips, jot down ideas for places to see and record the amazing experiences you have had.

A travel journal is a great way to store your memories, mementoes, discoveries, and delights. You do not need to rely on a phone signal or wifi, it can be as private or as public as you like.

There is a joy to be had in writing down your thoughts, plans and ideas the moment they pop into your mind. You can take it with you anyplace, anywhere.

Why cork is a heavyweight champion of environmental benefits.

Cork fabric is widely considered one of the most eco-friendly materials on the planet. Unlike many “green” alternatives that rely on clever marketing, cork’s sustainability is rooted in its biological cycle and the way it is harvested.

One of the fascinating facts about cork is that it actually helps the environment more when it is harvested than when it is left alone plus there are lots of other environmental and ethical benefits too.

CO2 Absorption: A harvested cork oak tree absorbs 3 to 5 times more carbon dioxide than an unharvested one. This is because the tree uses the CO2 to fuel the intensive process of regenerating its bark.

Massive Carbon Sink: The Mediterranean cork forests sequester approximately 14 million tons of CO2 every year.

Bark Stripping: Only the outer bark of the Quercus suber (Cork Oak) is removed. This is done by hand using traditional axes, a skill passed down through generations that requires no heavy machinery or fossil fuels.

Longevity: A single tree can live for over 200 years and be harvested up to 15–20 times during its life cycle.

Comparison to Animal Leather: Animal leather requires massive amounts of water, land for livestock, and toxic chemicals (like chromium) for tanning. Cork is processed using only heat and water.

Comparison to “Vegan” Plastics: Many vegan leathers are just PU (Polyurethane) or PVC, which are petroleum-based and shed microplastics.

By-product Utilisation: The “best” cork goes to wine stoppers. The offcuts, dust, and lower-grade bark are ground up and pressed into the sheets used for fabric, flooring, or insulation.

Energy Generation: Many cork factories use their own cork dust as a biomass fuel to power their facilities.

3 Ways to Set Up Your Traveller Notebook

One of the biggest hurdles for newcomers is the “blank page” syndrome. Here are three popular ways to structure your inserts:

1. The Minimalist

Ideal For: Everyday Carry (EDC)

Suggested Page Layouts: A Weekly Planner with plain white paper and a Lined Notebook section for notes.

2. The Creative

Ideal For: Artists & Memory Keepers

Suggested Page Layouts: Plain white paper for Sketchbook art, Square Grid for ephemera, and Dot Grid for planning & recording.

3. The Professional

Ideal For: Adventure Planning & Tracking

Suggested Page Layouts: Square or Dot Grid Notebook, Plain White or Ruled Lined Paper for long notes.

Tips for Starting Your Analog Journey

Don’t Overthink the “System”: You don’t need a perfect aesthetic. The beauty of a Traveller Notebook  is that you can use whatever layout works for you and you can have a mix of layouts as suggested above..

Embrace the Bulk: Don’t be afraid to stuff it with stickers, ticket stubs, and photos. A “chunky” notebook is a well-loved notebook.

Choose your paper inserts: Plain White, Ruled Lined, Dot Grid and Squared Paper or a custom mix to suit you own personal needs.

The Bottom Line

A Traveller’s Notebook is more than just paper. It’s a place to slow down, a repository for your “aha!” moments, and a physical record of where you’ve been. In 2026, taking a moment to put pen to paper isn’t just nostalgic, it’s a form of mental clarity.

Journals don’t just have to be for travelling.

Using a handmade journal is a unique keepsake, as each one has been carefully crafted with precision and passion for you to fill with your own memories, thoughts, ideas, plans and creativity.

It can be used as a diary to record personal thoughts, dreams, and experiences. It can serve as a sketchbook for artists to capture their ideas and inspirations. Writers can use it as a place to draft stories, poems, or notes. Additionally, it can be a practical tool for organisation, planning, or goal-setting.

Over To You.

If you could only keep one thing in your Traveller’s Notebook, a daily planner, a sketchbook, or a collection of mementos, which would be the one you couldn’t live without?
